Book onlineA pediatric cardiologist diagnoses, treats and monitors conditions of the heart and cardiovascular system in children — from the newborn period through adolescence. The doctor also carries out a preventive assessment of heart function, even when nothing is troubling your child.
When to see a cardiologist
- your child tires quickly during ordinary physical activity;
- breathlessness has appeared when walking, running or playing actively;
- your child complains of pain or discomfort around the heart;
- they feel a rapid or irregular heartbeat;
- there is dizziness, weakness or episodes of fainting;
- blood pressure is raised or low;
- the pulse is too fast, too slow or irregular;
- your baby sweats heavily or tires easily during feeding;
- the doctor has heard a heart murmur;
- changes have been found on an ECG or heart ultrasound;
- there is a congenital heart condition or defect;
- your child has had an illness after which heart function should be checked;
- close relatives have serious cardiovascular disease;
- your child plays sport actively and the cardiovascular system needs assessing.
What the doctor assesses at the appointment The cardiologist takes a history, examines your child and assesses heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure and how the cardiovascular system is working. If needed, they will recommend further diagnostics — an ECG and echocardiography (heart ultrasound).
