Book onlineA pediatric ENT doctor diagnoses and treats conditions of the ear, throat and nose, and helps identify problems that can affect a child's breathing, hearing, sleep and general wellbeing.
When to see an ENT doctor
- your child often has a runny nose, tonsillitis or other ENT infections;
- a runny or blocked nose that does not clear for a long time;
- your child breathes through their mouth all the time;
- snoring or noisy breathing during sleep;
- enlarged adenoids are suspected;
- ear pain, a blocked feeling or discharge from the ear;
- your child's hearing has got worse, or they often ask you to repeat things;
- frequent ear infections;
- a sore or scratchy throat, or difficulty swallowing;
- enlarged tonsils;
- frequent nosebleeds;
- unusual discharge or an unpleasant smell from the nose;
- a foreign body in the nose or ear is suspected;
- a preventive examination before kindergarten or school.
What the doctor assesses at the appointment The ENT doctor examines your child's ears, nose, nasopharynx and throat, assesses the condition of the mucous membranes and tonsils and looks for other signs of ENT conditions. If needed, they will arrange further tests and decide on treatment or follow-up.
Why hearing and nasal breathing are worth checking A young child cannot always explain that their hearing has got worse or that it is hard to breathe through the nose. Yet a long-standing problem with nasal breathing or hearing affects sleep, behaviour, speech and development.
