Book onlineA pediatric ophthalmologist diagnoses, monitors and treats eye conditions and vision problems in children. The doctor checks visual acuity, assesses the position and function of the eyes, detects refractive errors and other eye problems and, where needed, plans further monitoring and correction.
When to see an ophthalmologist
- your child's distance or near vision has got worse;
- they often squint when looking at distant objects;
- they sit too close to the television or a screen;
- they lean low over a book or exercise book;
- they tire quickly when reading, writing or doing homework;
- they complain of headaches after close work;
- they complain of pain, stinging, itching or a “gritty” feeling in the eyes;
- the eyes become red;
- the eyes water more than usual;
- there is discharge from the eyes;
- they have become sensitive to light;
- your child rubs their eyes or blinks frequently;
- one or both eyes drift to the side from time to time;
- a squint is suspected;
- your child covers one eye or tilts their head to look at something;
- parents have noticed something unusual about the appearance of the eye or pupil;
- vision in one eye differs from the other;
- there has been an eye injury;
- your child already wears glasses and their vision needs checking;
- glasses need to be prescribed or adjusted;
- vision needs checking before kindergarten or school;
- parents have significant vision problems — short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism;
- an examination has been recommended by a pediatrician or another specialist.
What the doctor can detect
- short-sightedness (myopia);
- long-sightedness (hyperopia);
- astigmatism;
- squint (strabismus);
- amblyopia — reduced vision in one or both eyes that develops in childhood;
- other vision problems and eye conditions.
A preventive examination Even when a child has no complaints, an eye examination helps detect vision problems in good time. Young children often do not realise and cannot explain that they see poorly: to them, that is simply how the world looks.
